In 2003 as a result of a motorcycle accident I’ve lost my left leg above the knee and a permanent injury in my left elbow. After weeks of recovery at a hospital and later on at home I started the journey to understand what to do and how to do it. When I had the accident, I was already working in the IT area for an Italian Oil Company in Venezuela. They placed me in a paid recovery absence for 6 months which help me recover, understand my priorities and the path to pursue. Having the right people around and the strength they gave me was a key to overcome a life-changing event... and look at it on the bright side.
Sports activities guide me through tough moments and gave me the strength to look forward to recovering and put my mind to be able to run, to ride a Bicycle, swim, ride a motorcycle, etc.. Bringing me the closest I could to my
life. After a while I realized that I was not close to my pre-accident life, I was in a different path, way better one, a better person and with a different point of view, that’s where I stopped comparing to my pre-accident life and continue living my actual one, as an amputee, as an athlete, as a father, as a professional...what I would call an amazing life.
I have been competing in Running races, Swimming races and Triathlon for some years already, but always versus fully able bodies as an age grouper, because due to work and the places where I was located. (Nigeria, Kazakhstan, Iraq) was difficult to fit in the training program for Para-triathlon and other activities with folks having my same condition. In 2016 moving back to fully live and work in Miami, FL I started pursuing the goal to compete at the high level of para-triathlon, there is not age group... only Elite athletes at this level of competition if you reach the level.
In October 2016, I qualified as first timer to compete in the Para-triathlon World Cup 2017 in Sarasota, FL, meeting the Best in the World for my Category PTS2 (Lower Limb Amputation above Knee). I was very excited and nervous and I gave my all, even though conditions were very bad to the point that swim leg was canceled and the race was changed to Duathlon format (Run-Bike-Run). Not the race I prepared for but never quit and never retreat. Noticed that I did not have the right prosthesis or different kind for each activity, but it did not make me quit, I ran my first leg, Biked and ran again, completing the course and getting the 4th place. Which was very nice for me, but not happy with the difference between my time and the one in 3rd place for example.
I was missing a special Prosthesis to ride the bike. (I was riding with a single leg), which will help to balance power in the bicycle, walk-in transition rather than jumping carrying the bicycle, and keep me fresh for the run.
The System I use for the running leg is complicated to attach, I’m trying to get a suspension system (The way my Prosthesis gets attached to my residual limb) that will be quicker to attach to improve Transition 2 Performance.
This is the reason why I’m looking for sponsors related to the sports or to activities related to daily activities, to which I can provide my image as a successful person which has overcome adversity, did not stop leaving and made the best out of whatever life throws at him.
